When installing lighting in schools there are many factors to consider. The wellbeing and performance of students and staff are primary concerns, and numerous aspects of lighting are influential in this. Natural window light is encouraged in schools, which has long been known to positively affect mood, energy and concentration. Colour temperature in artificial lighting has an important role to play, too. A cool white light source makes students more focused and generally improves performance, whilst a warmer light may be useful when engaging young children in calmer activities.

ROBUS fittings have been successfully installed in 40 countries for the past 34 years. Simple installation, significant energy savings and ‘fit and forget’ solutions are key for any application area and we have products to cater for all.

Classrooms should be fitted with high quality lighting fixtures to promote learning and prevent eye fatigue. Classrooms where students perform manual and artistic work require a specific lighting system that gives students a very clear view of their objects. At all times, light fixtures should be easily controlled so that the teacher or instruction is able to reduce light intensity or turn off the lighting system according to activities that occur such as working in front of a computer screen, during interaction between students, or when using projectors, etc. Classrooms require a uniform distribution of light, avoiding harsh shadows or excessive modelling.

Corridors and staircases

The main objective here is safe flow of traffic, bearing in mind that corridors and staircases will also be part of an emergency escape route. Lighting systems in educational institutions remain powered for long hours because of their high occupancy rate: day courses, night classes, maintenance work, etc. In all these instances, corridors need to be well lit to facilitate circulation and ensure public safety. The installation of occupancy sensors is highly recommended as well as smart lighting solutions that illuminate only the occupied spaces.

Laboratory lighting has to be robust, IP-rated for resistance to chemical splashes, and needs to deliver a smooth, glare-free light.

Entrance Hall

Areas of transition between outdoors and indoors are potentially hazardous. It takes time for our eyes to adjust to different strengths of light. For this reason, entrance halls are required to be brighter than corridors.

Dining Areas

Dining areas need to be relatively well lit, with brighter lighting than adjacent circulation areas.

Outdoor Areas

Outside an educational facility, safe orientation must be enabled at all times. This includes clear visibility around pathways and entrances, and in adjoining school areas such as playgrounds, bike sheds and car parks.
